The Government of the Republic of Armenia has initiated the creation of free economic zone in Syunik region in the area bordering Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran and Armenia aim to develop economic and industrial relations through promotion of private trade and investment. The establishment of the free economic zone is in line with the key directions of the Government. The main goal of the Free Economic Zone (FEZ) is to contribute to the export volume growth and creation of new workplaces, as well as ensure sustainable economic development through integrating foreign direct investments and introducing advanced technologies. An appropriate legal framework has been established to ensure the operation of free economic zones. With this regard, the Law of the Republic of Armenia (RA) “On Free Economic Zones” adopted on May 25, 2011 by National Assembly of Armenia is a basic regulatory document. Aimed at providing tax and customs preferences prescribed by this Law, relevant amendments have also been introduced to other related laws. Activities of FEZ are regulated also by Government decree 1521-N. To foster regional economic cooperation and for further development of the national economy, growth of the export volumes the Armenian Government has decided to initiate the establishment of Free Economic Zone in the marz of Syunik which is situated at the border with Iran.
